t o mark the close of a memorable year, we partnered with an organization that has been serving the community for decades. In this special issue, we are excited to introduce readers to Valley of the Sun United Way president and CEO Carla Vargas Jasa and congratulate the organization on 95 years of serving Maricopa County. The issue also highlights several organizations that Valley of the Sun United Way supports. In them, we think you’ll see the caring power of collaboration that sets our community apart. I could easily list dozens of things I found inspirational as I worked on this Holiday Issue. But in the spirit of the season, I will share 12 of my favorite: Lory Parson’s Roasted Brussels Sprout Salad with Maple Balsamic Glaze recipe. Thanksgiving side-dish selection, done! Christine Kajikawa Wilkinson’s wise words to remember the many seasons of our colleagues’ lives. A simple statement with profound meaning. The tranquil scene captured on the last page of the magazine. Outdoor events at this time of year — how lucky are we? The reopening of Café Allegro at the Musical Instrument Museum, one of my favorite places to recommend to friends. John Graham’s motto — “It is better to be nice than to be right.” More advice that cuts to the heart. EDITOR’S NOTE { on the job } MY FAVORITE THINGS “Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley” — a new addition to my holiday calendar. The innovative work Hushabye Nursery does for the tiniest victims of the opioid crisis. “Trillion Dollar Coach” — a perfect pick for a few folks on my list. The Wee Winter Wonderland at the Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures. How have I never heard of this Tucson treasure? Eric Sperling’s sage suggestion to use the lessons of these challenging years to spur something big. The new Skysill Rooftop Lounge that Shoshana Leon wrote about. Another place to enjoy our winter weather. Seeing Valley of the Sun United Way president and CEO Carla Vargas Jasa dressed as Wonder Woman as a child. Proof that the stories we hear and tell ourselves matter. On that note, we hope you enjoy the stories, gifts and events shared here, and that they help you enjoy a meaningful holiday season.
