LAST LOOK HIGH-OCTANE STYLE On a January night at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, the roar of the ’80s and ’90s returned — not just in the gleam of vintage metal, but in the visionary designs of ASU FIDM students. Against a backdrop of iconic cars and neon lights, 20 emerging designers debuted custom jackets inspired by the museum’s “Totally Awesome!” exhibition, merging automotive history and high fashion. The event was a masterclass in cross-city synergy for the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM). Students from both the Phoenix and L.A. campuses collaborated backstage and on the runway, proving that the distance between the cities is easily bridged by creative ambition. From hand-crafted textiles to vegan leather silhouettes, the showcase was more than a fashion show — it was a high-speed springboard for the next generation of industry talent. As ASU FIDM continues to fuel the West Coast’s creative engine, the celebration of nostalgia is just shifting gears. This spring, the ASU FIDM Museum in L.A. debuts “Obsessed: Fashion and Nostalgia in the ‘90s,” featuring works from Versace, Westwood and Gaultier.
