8 | VALLEY LEADERSHIP MAN & WOMAN OF THE YEAR
John Graham heads up one of the most established and respected real estate development, management and investment companies in the Southwest. The Sunbelt Holdings chairman and chief executive officer also has far deeper roots in the region. A graduate of Brophy College Preparatory, an institution he credits with instilling in him the importance of being a “Man for Others,” Graham then moved on to Stanford University, where he earned an economics degree before returning to Arizona to make his mark on the area. After honing his skillset with asset management firms including the Koll Company and Coldwell Banker, John signed on with Sunbelt in 1982 before assuming his current position in 1990. Under John’s direction, Sunbelt quickly became a dominant force in real estate activities as well as community affairs, catapulting the business into the forefront of the industry while giving John a platform from which to better serve the community and support the causes and organizations of interest to him. In doing so, he helped champion many of the efforts made by Banner Health and Arizona State University to expand access to quality education and health care services for all state residents, and he also served as a board member on seemingly every major board of directors in the region at some point or another. Currently, he maintains board affiliations with the ASU Foundation, the Banner Health Foundation, Brophy College Preparatory and the Greater Phoenix Economic Council. Additionally, he serves as a board member of Greater Phoenix Leadership, the Heard Museum, the Partnership for Economic Innovation, the Phoenix Art Museum, the Phoenix Symphony Association and the Phoenix Zoo. John has also proved himself an invaluable resource to the Rio Salado Foundation, St. Francis Xavier Jesuit Elementary School and Parish, the Southern Arizona Leadership Council, the StartUp AZ Foundation, Teach for America Phoenix, the Nature Conservancy and the Urban Land Institute. He also serves on the boards of the Valley of the Sun United Way, the Valley of the Sun YMCA, the Wells Fargo Community Advisory Board and Westmarc. John makes it clear that his greatest success in life has been his family, who partners with him in his work to help shape the community. His family includes his wife Kathleen, daughter Annie (and wife Shetha) and sons Justin (and wife Mary) and Will. Few people have their finger as firmly on the pulse of the local business and charitable landscape as John Graham, and far fewer have made contributions to the community that have matched John’s level of impact.
